A trauma-informed occupational therapy (OT) assessment is a comprehensive, child-centered evaluation designed to understand a child’s strengths, challenges, and unique needs through the lens of their experiences, including any impact of trauma. This approach recognises the profound effect trauma can have on a child’s development, behaviour, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and ability to engage in daily activities.
Our process is highly individualised, seeking to uncover the underlying reasons behind a child’s behaviours or difficulties, rather than focusing solely on surface-level challenges. It integrates observations, parent/caregiver input, and evidence-based assessment tools to provide a holistic understanding of the child’s needs.
The goal of a trauma-informed OT assessment is not only to identify areas for intervention but also to empower families and professionals with insights and strategies that promote safety, trust, connection, healing and growth. It forms the foundation for creating individualised plans that help children thrive in their everyday environments.
